Outgoing Referrals

A healthcare professional writes an outgoing referral to request that a specialist healthcare professional or healthcare organisation provide an expert opinion, diagnosis, or treatment plan for the patient's medical condition.

Create an outgoing referral letter from the Letter Writer in a patient's Consult panel. The referral can be addressed to any HCP or healthcare organisation in the Helix Address Book or recorded in the HealthLink directory.

You can send specialist referrals to a healthcare professional or healthcare organisation via:

  • Secure Message Delivery - only to recipients whose details are recorded in the HealthLink directory. For more information, see Refer a Patient to a Specialist.
  • Email - only to recipients whose details are recorded in the address book. For more information, see Refer a Patient to a Specialist.
  • HealthLink SmartForms - IconSmartFormsExternal Link -9 Icon link - create and send SmartForm to the specialist from the HealthLink SmartForms portal. For more information, see Send HealthLink SmartForms.

After you have sent the referral, it is available:

  • In the Consult iconConsult > Consult actions > Other actions during the patient consultation.
  • In the Patient search - iconPatient Search > Patient timeline iconPatient Timeline > Filter icon Show > Specialist iconSpecialist - after you have completed the patient consultation.
  • In the Outbox section - if you have sent the referral letter via HealthLink SmartForms, email or secure message delivery.
